About Upper Canyon
Ruidoso essentially ‘began’ in the Upper Canyon which follows the course of the Rio Ruidoso down from Sierra Blanca. We say began, as this is where Ruidoso’s first residents would put down their roots, building summer cabins in the shady canyon aside the twisting, babbling river. By definition, Upper Canyon expands beyond the Main Road corridor to include Flume Canyon, Black Forest, Perk Canyon and subdivisions like White Fir, Thunderbird Heights and many others.
The Upper Canyon remains popular with full timers and Ruidoso second homeowners and, as a result, you can expect to pay a small premium for a residence in this area. The Upper Canyon comprises everything from tiny summer cabins to palatial mountain estates and literally everything in between. Many Upper Canyon residents find this area to be the quintessential Ruidoso experience with its tall pines whispering in canyon breezes, the noisy river bubbling and gurgling down from the Mountain, shady, sun dappled lawns and lazily grazing families of deer seemingly everywhere. Black bear sightings at dusk and dawn are very common as well.
